Discovering Mürren: Switzerland’s Car-Free Alpine Gem 🌄


As part of our Switzerland family journey, we set out on a day trip to Mürren, one of the most picturesque car-free villages in the Jungfrau region. Perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley at 1,650 meters (5,400 feet), Mürren feels like a world suspended between sky and peaks.

How to Reach Mürren 🚠

One of the most unique things about Mürren is that you cannot drive there. The village is completely traffic-free, which adds to its peaceful charm. From our base in Grindelwald, we drove to Lauterbrunnen, parked the car, and then continued by gondola. Another option is to take the train from Grindelwald or Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and connect with the gondola or cableway + narrow-gauge railway combo. No matter how you arrive, the journey itself is an adventure.

First Impressions of the Village 🏡

Walking through Mürren is like stepping into a postcard. Traditional Swiss chalets line the cobbled lanes, their balconies overflowing with bright geraniums. The air is crisp and fresh, and the only sounds are cowbells echoing from nearby alpine pastures. Everywhere you look, the famous peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau dominate the skyline, creating one of the most breathtaking backdrops in Switzerland.

  • Allmendhubel Funicular – A short ride takes you to panoramic trails and a beautiful playground surrounded by alpine wildflowers.

  • Hiking & Strolling – Mürren is full of scenic paths, from leisurely walks through meadows to cliffside views over the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

  • Cafés & Restaurants – Cozy spots to sip Swiss coffee, enjoy alpine specialties, or simply relax with the views.

  • Shopping Local – Small shops offer Swiss crafts, souvenirs, and regional treats perfect to take home.

In summer, wildflowers paint the village with vibrant colors. We skipped the Allmendhubel funicular this time, so we missed out on more flower trails—but even within the village, blossoms were everywhere.

Accessibility ♿

Mürren is surprisingly accessible for families and travelers with mobility needs. In our group, we had one wheelchair, and with a little assistance, we were able to cover most parts of the village. Smooth paths, ramps, and a generally flat layout in the village center make it easy to explore.

It’s peaceful, unhurried, and truly feels like a hidden alpine gem.
