Lauterbrunnen – Gateway to Wengen, Mürren & Switzerland’s Valley of Waterfalls

Image
No trip to Switzerland is complete without visiting Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Jungfrau region. Tucked between steep cliffs and surrounded by snow-covered peaks, Lauterbrunnen is one of the most scenic valleys in Europe, famous for its 72 waterfalls . The most iconic is Staubbach Falls , cascading right beside the village, creating a picture-perfect alpine scene. Lauterbrunnen is more than just a pretty stop—it’s a true gateway to adventure . From here, you can reach two of Switzerland’s most beautiful car-free villages , Wengen and Mürren , both offering breathtaking mountain views and alpine charm. For those looking to explore natural wonders, the impressive Trümmelbach Falls inside the mountain are a must-see, though note they are not wheelchair-accessible. How to Get to Lauterbrunnen You can reach Lauterbrunnen easily by train or bus from Interlaken and Grindelwald. If you’re driving, there’s a convenient parking garage right in the village. From there, everything is walkab...

Wengen, Switzerland: Car-Free Alpine Village Above Lauterbrunnen

Image
During our recent Switzerland family trip, we visited yet another car-free village. In my other video, I covered Mürren—today’s blog is all about Wengen . Getting There (Our Route in the Same Order) We based ourselves in Grindelwald and used a rental car for flexibility. From Grindelwald, we drove to Lauterbrunnen , parked at the station parking, and hopped on the train to Wengen . Simple, smooth, and scenic. Quick note: Wengen is car-free . You can’t drive up from the valley. Park in Lauterbrunnen and take the short mountain train. Within the village, there are electric taxis and hotel shuttles to help with luggage or longer walks. The Ride Up: Enjoy the Journey The train ride is part of the experience . As the carriage climbs, the Lauterbrunnen Valley opens like a giant amphitheater—sheer cliffs, waterfalls threading down the rock, green meadows dotted with chalets. Switzerland rewards slow travel: don’t rush to the final stop. Soak in the mountains, valleys, lakes, and fall...

Discovering Mürren: Switzerland’s Car-Free Alpine Gem 🌄

As part of our Switzerland family journey, we set out on a day trip to Mürren, one of the most picturesque car-free villages in the Jungfrau region. Perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley at 1,650 meters (5,400 feet), Mürren feels like a world suspended between sky and peaks. How to Reach Mürren 🚠 One of the most unique things about Mürren is that you cannot drive there. The village is completely traffic-free, which adds to its peaceful charm. From our base in Grindelwald, we drove to Lauterbrunnen, parked the car, and then continued by gondola. Another option is to take the train from Grindelwald or Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and connect with the gondola or cableway + narrow-gauge railway combo. No matter how you arrive, the journey itself is an adventure. First Impressions of the Village 🏡 Walking through Mürren is like stepping into a postcard. Traditional Swiss chalets line the cobbled lanes, their balconies overflowing with bright geraniums. The air is crisp and fres...
