Exploring Milan in 2 Days | Duomo Tour, Bike Ride & Magical Navigli Evening

2 Days in Milan: From the Duomo to Navigli Nights

After spending time in Genoa, we made our way to Milan, the global capital of fashion, design, and Italian elegance. Our plan was simple: spend 2 days soaking up the city at a relaxed pace. While many visitors rush through Milan, we discovered that giving it time reveals just how much this city has to offer.

πŸŒ™ Day 1: Arrival & Exploring by Bike

We arrived in Milan late in the evening and kept things easy. After settling into our Airbnb, we rested to recharge for the adventures ahead.

The next morning, we discovered one of Milan’s hidden strengths: it’s an incredibly bike‑friendly city 🚴. Renting a bike through the BikeMi app was easy, and within minutes we were cycling through Milan’s well‑marked paths and green parks. The city’s flat terrain and wide roads make it a joy to explore on two wheels.

Later in the evening, we slowed down the pace with a casual stroll through Milan’s historic district. The cobblestone streets, elegant architecture, and buzzing piazzas gave us a perfect introduction to the city’s character.

🏰 Day 2: Milan’s Icons

The Duomo di Milano

Our second day began with a visit to Milan’s crown jewel — the Duomo di Milano. We had booked a guided tour in advance, which we highly recommend. Not only did we learn about the cathedral’s fascinating history, but we also climbed to the rooftop terraces for panoramic views of the city.

πŸ‘‰ Pro Tip: If you’re unsure about your dates, you can often buy tickets on the spot, but guided tours add depth to the experience.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Right next to the Duomo is the breathtaking Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world’s oldest shopping malls. Even if luxury shopping isn’t on your list, the soaring glass dome and mosaic floors are worth seeing.

Leonardo3 Museum – The World of Leonardo

Inside the Galleria, we visited the Leonardo3 Museum. This interactive space showcases Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions and artworks through models and digital displays. Though it’s small, it’s fascinating — but if you’re short on time, you won’t miss too much by skipping it.

After our cultural morning, we enjoyed a relaxed lunch and a short rest back at our Airbnb.

🌊 Evening in Navigli District

That evening, we set out for the lively Navigli District, famous for its canals.

  • Naviglio Grande is the main canal, lined with cafes, wine bars, and lively spots for an evening aperitivo.

  • Naviglio Pavese is quieter, offering a picturesque setting for photography and daytime walks.

Fun fact: Leonardo da Vinci helped design parts of Milan’s canal system, including routes that once transported marble for the Duomo.

As the sun set, Navigli transformed into a vibrant hub of nightlife. The reflections of colorful lights on the water, combined with live music and the buzz of evening crowds, made it a magical way to wrap up our Milan stay.

πŸ‘‰ If you’re here on the last Sunday of the month, don’t miss the Naviglio Grande vintage market — nearly 2 km of antiques, crafts, and quirky finds.

πŸš† Farewell to Milan

With our 2 days complete, we packed up the next morning and boarded a train to Switzerland to continue our journey. While we missed visiting Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper (L’Ultima Cena), Milan left us with unforgettable memories.

(Note: Reservations for The Last Supper are mandatory and sell out fast — book well in advance!)

☀️ Summer in Milan: A Quick Note

We traveled in July, and the city was hot! Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, apply sunscreen, and plan outdoor activities for mornings or evenings to avoid the midday heat.

✅ Pro Tips for Milan Visitors

  • 🚴 Use the BikeMi app for easy bike rentals — Milan is very cycle‑friendly.

  • 🏰 Book your Duomo tour in advance for a richer experience.

  • πŸŒ‡ Spend an evening in Navigli — the atmosphere after sunset is unforgettable.

  • πŸ›️ Visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II — even if just to admire the architecture.

  • 🎟️ Reserve tickets for The Last Supper weeks ahead if it’s on your list.

Final Thoughts

Milan may often be seen as a stopover city, but our 2‑day stay proved it has so much more to offer. From cycling through its streets to standing atop the Duomo and ending the day by the canals of Navigli, Milan gave us a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern charm.

If you’re planning a trip to Italy, make sure Milan is more than just a quick stop — it’s a city that deserves your time.
