A Day in Bern, Switzerland – Clock Tower, Bears & Panoramic Views 🇨🇭

During our family trip to Switzerland in July, we had planned to spend most of our time surrounded by nature—majestic Swiss Alps, sparkling lakes, and breathtaking landscapes. But in between all that natural beauty, we decided to dedicate one day to experience something different: Bern, the capital of Switzerland and a UNESCO World Heritage city.

Getting to Bern

We drove from Grindelwald to Bern, enjoying the scenic roads along the way. For those who prefer public transport, Bern is extremely well-connected by trains, making it an easy day trip from many parts of Switzerland.

Exploring Bern’s Old Town

With just a single day in the city, we focused on Bern’s Old Town—a beautifully preserved medieval area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The cobblestone streets, medieval arcades, and charming corridors were full of life during the day. Locals and tourists filled the streets, browsing shops, enjoying cafés, and soaking in the vibrant energy. We did some light shopping, picked up a few souvenirs, and treated ourselves to some delicious Swiss sweets.

The Iconic Zytglogge Clock Tower

One of Bern’s most famous landmarks is the Zytglogge Clock Tower. Every hour, it comes alive with an animated show. The length of the show depends on the time: at 1 o’clock, it’s the shortest; at 12 o’clock, it’s the most elaborate. Unfortunately, we were there around 1:00 PM, so we only caught the brief version—but it was still fascinating to witness this centuries-old tradition.

Later that evening, I returned to Old Town around 10 PM. The bustling atmosphere from the day had completely transformed. The streets were calm, most shops were closed, and only restaurants remained open. People were enjoying cozy dinners, and the city felt peaceful—like a different Bern altogether.

Meeting the Bears at BärenPark

Just across from the clock tower, on the banks of the River Aare, lies the BärenPark (Bear Park). A few bears were roaming the hillside, and it was such a unique experience to see them in this natural setting, right in the middle of the city.

Rose Garden & Panoramic Views

Our last stop was the Rose Garden, located on an elevated hill above the city. The climb was a bit uphill, but absolutely worth it. The higher we went, the more of Bern unfolded before us in a spectacular panoramic view. The garden itself was peaceful and pretty, but the sweeping view of the city was the highlight—windy, refreshing, and unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Though Bern was just a one-day stop on our Switzerland adventure, it gave us a perfect balance of history, culture, and scenic views. From the animated clock tower and Bear Park to the Rose Garden’s panoramic vistas, Bern turned out to be more than just a capital city—it was an experience that beautifully complemented our nature-filled trip through the Alps.
